A resident living in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, sued a land developer for 30,000 yuan ($3,993) in compensation after his house was kept out of the sunlight by a new building the developer had built in 2003.

Since then, the man, surnamed Hao, has had to switch all the lights on at his home, even in the daytime, because the building blocks out almost all the sunshine.

With the help of a local court, a professional appraiser proved that fact to be correct. Last Saturday, the court ruled that the developer must compensate him 23,000 yuan for infringing upon his easement of light.
