A man surnamed Ma had a miserable National Day holiday in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, because of the amount of money he had to pay out for other people's weddings.

"I was invited to six weddings and spent 2,400 yuan ($320) on gifts for the couples, all my wages for the month. I didn't know what to do with the rest of my time without any money," Ma said.

A Xi'an local authority official said more than 700 couples tied the knot in the city's three districts during the holiday period.
