Computer-linked cameras have been installed in kitchens of seven restaurants in Haidian District, Beijing, last week, as part of efforts to monitor and improve sanitation in the food industry.

Footage from these cameras will be kept for a month by inspectors and drawn on in the event of any lapse in standards reported by diners.

Zhang, an official in charge of the district's sanitary control, said he hopes the move can be extended to all the district's restaurants.

Restaurant bosses are not so excited about the new devices. Some say the cameras will reveal trade secrets and closely guarded recipes.
