A primary school has sparked controversy over a new regulation that stipulates pupils from grades one to three must be led by the hand themselves when going to toilet.

The move at the school in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, is meant to help avoid accidents during toilet trips.

It was introduced after a boy was injured in a fight with others in the toilet a month ago.

Teachers and parents say the new rule will cause pupils to lose their individuality and independence.
