A male penguin got the sack late last week after failing to hatch an egg laid by a female penguin at a zoo in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province.

Early last month, a female penguin laid an egg, the first at the zoo in several years, but broke it during incubation. Fortunately, it laid another egg three weeks later.

A male penguin was picked as the best candidate to hatch the egg. But during the incubation period the penguin repeatedly cracked the egg's surface. Another penguin has since been chosen for the job.
