A female police office who directs traffic at a crossroad during morning rush hours in southwest China's Chongqing city has drawn much attention from passers-by. Drivers, mindful of her presence, have begun to modify their behaviors.

Ding Hong, 26, began her career in the elite police force of the municipal public security bureau in 2001, before switching to traffic police in 2004.

The Chongqing Economic Times reports that Ding Hong was inspired by the bearing of a mounted policewoman she met in Dalian. Afterwards, she went to her boss and asked to direct traffic on regular shifts herself. Ding now gets up at 6am and directs traffic from 7:30 to 9:30am.

Zeng Po, a fellow traffic police officer, jokingly said of Ding's work: "I can't believe drivers would cause traffic accidents in order to see Ding Hong."

Zeng says Ding's presence draws most citizens' attention, and under her direction, traffic jams have greatly improved. Drivers behave better when they see Ding's direction.

One driver says: "No matter what, we should become gentlemen when seeing such a beauty's direction."

The newspaper reports that one driver focused so much on Ding that he hit another car on March 21. The same thing happened on the road the next day.

Ding says: "I hope drivers can steer more carefully when I'm on duty on the road."

Some netizens say they support female traffic police's direction on the road and expect to see more in the future, to build a new image for traffic police and promote Chongqing's image.
