Ending blog slander
Blog slander cannot be completely disposed of with a code.
To find solutions for blog slander, we should first find the causes. In most cases, blog slander is caused by hatred.
We should remind netizens of the hurt they may cause others through their damaging comments.
We might also include an Internet class in school curriculums. Different from computer classes, the Internet class would deal with Internet behavior and language.
Blog slander cannot be eliminated in a day. Only when we substantially improve our morality can we protect our Internet civilization. What we need is a course in morality, not a code of action.

Balanced education
Comment on "China Laureus sports awards have winners" (China Daily website. May 12)
Sports are important to a certain extent, but science and technology should be emphasized as they are more relevant to a nation's economy and defense.
China has emphasized the humanities in her long history while lagging behind in science.
A new and reasonable balance should be achieved in the education of the young.

Bad advice
My roommate's tutor told her to give up the foreign teacher's oral and writing classes to gain some professional knowledge.
I was startled at what my roommate's tutor said.
English, math and other basic subjects are the foundation of our learning other advanced subjects.
In my opinion, a teacher should teach us knowledge, help us learn how to be a man, learn how to survive in competitive society, not including teaching us to skip classes.

Heightened awareness
Comment on "Yangtze at risk of bank collapses" (China Daily, May 14)
I am very happy to see that officials at the local and central levels are paying heed to the danger of flooding along the Yangtze River banks.
Such heightened alert reflects a growing awareness of the danger of natural disasters and the need to prepare adequate measures to counter the calamities when they do occur.
China needs tons of money to tackle huge problems such as water pollution, air pollution and reclamation of damaged land sustained over the years.
