Kiln tragedy
Comments on "Man gets death for kiln slavery" ( China Daily web, July 17)
It is truly terrible that this was allowed to happen for so long. However,
stopping it is a step in the right direction, and the liberators of the children
should be praised, as should the punishment of all those responsible.
Why do the people allow this to happen rather than take up arms against their
tormentors?

Retreating glaciers
Comment on "Climate change taking toll on glaciers" ( China Daily, July 17)
Solving the problem is not an easy task. I think balancing the benefit of
protecting the environment and the economy is a bit strenuous. I hope we shall
overcome the difficulties in the near future.

Japan quake
Comment on "Strong quake rocks northwestern Japan" (China Daily web, July 16)
Their buildings and public infrastructure were designed with earthquakes in
mind.
Though never 100 percent safe, the low casualty count is impressive. Other
countries prone to earthquakes can take lessons from Japan.
