Seeking peace

Comments on "Peacekeeping - a rising role for China's PLA" (China Daily, July 24)

As a former peacekeeper myself during the war in Bosnia, I know very well how noble the mission of a blue beret is.

Violence can only ever be destructive and it brings misery to millions of people.

Sooner or later, the countries or communities at war must go to the negotiating table to solve the problem. The blue berets of the United Nations play an important role in peacekeeping and peace-forcing.

China plays an important role in these UN missions and deserves respect. Participating in them helps to build a more stable world and at same time build the good name of the country and reputation of his army.

Playing fair

Comments on "Should Beida recruit more recommended students" (China Daily website, July 9)

It is exactly right to grant professors more freedom and rights when deciding the admissions of postgraduate students.

What we should be concerned with is fairness and stopping corruption, not just blaming recommended students, most of whom deserve priority treatment for their great efforts.

For instance, when I was an undergraduate, students with perfect academic scores and social records received the qualifications of recommendation. They were qualified to be enrolled as postgraduate students at top universities.

This long-term evaluation is more effective than a one-time entrance exam.

It sounds good news, but I don't think people should focus only on their marks, and we should pay more attention to students' extraordinary views on the subjects they study.

Make sure the competition is fair and open as possible.
