Avert mishap

Comment on "69 coal miners rescued after 3 days" (China Daily, August 1)

It is surely very heartening news, but the thing now is to ensure that such an accident does not recur. Let's be proactive and forestall the occurrence of such a disaster again rather than rushing to react to what has already happened.

Local government

Comment on "To fight pollution, China takes capitalist route" (China Daily web, July 31)

I think that this is a good tactic. However, leaders of provinces, townships, and villages who turn a blind eye to pollution, or lie about the extent of pollution in their areas, should be heavily fined and possibly removed from office. Only strict and ruthless enforcement of the rules by the central government will get this (and other flagrant abuses of the law) under control.

It's time for local government to realize that they are not above the law, and that they cannot continue to impede the efforts of the central government.

Who will trust the Western media spreading the rumor that China is an economic "threat"?

Those who have been to China know quite well that China is still a developing country.

What Westerners and their media are saying is a complete slander to China.
