Games celebrations
Comment on "China invites world to Olympics" (China Daily website, August 9)
Congratulations to China! "Best preparations ever. Everything is on target even one year ahead of schedule", said Jacque Rogge, the president of the IOC.
The air pollution problem is not new: it affected Los Angeles, Seoul and Atlanta before. Besides, China has taken concrete steps, like closing down factories or reducing car traffic.
So let the world come and celebrate with us and foster friendship and understanding.

Press can help
Comment on You Nuo's column "Exporters, it's time to clean up your act" (China Daily, August 6)
You Nuo makes an excellent point in his column: "What governments can realistically do to protect the interests of both small Chinese companies and importing countries' consumers, is to work out a better system to reinforce trade standards and ensure quality."
The press can help as well. Investigative reporters can write news stories and articles about standards and quality.
Some people look down on reporters as snoops and scandal mongers, but in fact the reports are an asset. You Nuo's column itself is a good example of how the press is working to achieve this goal.

Same papers
Comment on "US candidates discuss China 'to get votes'" (China Daily, August 9)
US politicians say the same things because they read the same papers. And the papers are controlled by the same wallets, so they write the same things.
But the candidate with the best acting talents will win the presidential election.

Irrational award
Comment on "Is a 680,000-yuan scholarship too much for a top student?" (China Daily website, August 7)
I think to give a student who comes in the top place in college entrance exam a proper amount of money as a reward for her academic efforts and to encourage other students is reasonable, but such a big number is not very rational.
The same money could be used to fund several students in remote areas to finish their education, in that way, the money might become more meaningful.
An acknowledgement of first place in the entrance exam can come in many other forms, and money is just one of them.

Comment on "Should Beida recruit more recommended students?" (China Daily website, August 9)
If those recommended students are outstanding enough, they can also pass the exams. Therefore there is no need for them to be recommended.
