Choice important
Comments on Li Xing's column "Students need more choices" (China Daily, October 11)
As a teacher, I believe choice is very important. There is nothing so soul-destroying as learning a subject you do not want to learn or teaching a subject students have no interest in.
I'm sure you are all aware of the saying; "You can lead a horse to the trough ..."

I cannot agree with the viewpoint ofthe author more. We should change the education of college system.

In Britain, you choose your university course before you have finished the exams course, A-levels, that you need to pass in order to go to university.
However, the emphasis has always been on a balance between interest and ability so that the course selected is, more often than not, one you are happy with by and large.
Chinese students do not get enough opportunities for choosing courses at an early enough age. When I was at school, as a 13- year-old, I had to choose whether to study French or German as a foreign language.
The education process in Britain is of making informed decisions, in comparison in China where far too often, the student is not the one who makes the decision but has to suffer the consequences.
