I think the leadership of China has done a pretty good job in the past five years if you think of the amount of issues they must have had to deal with as a developing nation.

Protection for the aged
Comments on "Aging population a challenge" (China Daily, October 23)
With the growth of the economy, China has the means to support the elderly, especially those living in the rural areas. It can improve their living standards by insurance and medical care systems, or any other efficient means.
Legislation should also be enacted to narrow the income gap between the rich and the poor, and increase the average income of the people.

Observation on target
Comment on Li Xing's column "Students need more choices" (China Daily, October 11)
I am a college/university advisor. My job is to help students completing high school in the United States to obtain admission to the best possible universities and to provide them with career guidance. So I am very familiar with the American university system. I am also familiar with the Chinese educational system, as I am with the educational systems of several other countries. I am also a frequent visitor to China.
I read your recent opinion piece in the China Daily online. First, let me congratulate you on your mastery of written English. Your opinion column was very well written.
Your observation about the need for change in the Chinese educational system was on target. It is certainly ironic that in a country which is undergoing so much change, changes in the educational system have not kept pace with change in other social and economic sectors. This is a very serious problem. The system, as it exists, is convenient for those who administer it but, as you articulate well in your article, it does not necessarily support the needs of students.
You should know that, in the US, students need not declare their major field of study until they have completed their first two years of study at university. This gives them time to not only explore the career field they are considering, but it also gives them the opportunity to take courses in other fields. Only then do they make a final determination about their career choice and then select the major in which they will obtain their first university degree. Such a reform is certainly possible in China. I hope more thoughtful young people such as yourself continue to make the case for it.

Comment on Li Xing's "Setting the record straight" (China Daily, October 18)
I agree with the author's opinion.
As far as I am concerned, the topic deals with morals between development and its final direction, which is of concern for every country.
