New holiday plan

Comment on "China makes 3 traditional festivals holidays" (China Daily website, December 16)

I think it's wonderful to adopt this new holiday plan. We'll have more time to relax and more chances to spend time with family.

It is great to hear that more traditional Chinese festivals will be made into public holidays. The most important point of this new holiday plan is to emphasize traditional Chinese culture.

When it comes to public holidays, I think China could borrow some other countries' methods by publishing a "gazette" that clearly identifies the holidays' specific dates years in advance.

By doing so people will have more time to make holiday plans.

Taiwan referendum

Comment on "Referendum bid could lead to 'high-risk period'" (China Daily, December 18)

Taiwan is undoubtedly an important and inalienable part of China. Solving the Taiwan question peacefully is every Chinese person's everlasting hope. It is also the world's hope.

The Chinese economy has been growing rapidly in recent years. China is confident and powerful enough to protect its national integrity. Anyone who wants to separate Taiwan from China will be seriously punished.

Referendums are not a reliable measure of what people think: They only show manipulated Q&A. Should Taiwan dwellers be asked: "Do you prefer war or integration with the mainland" you would have a clear "pro-unification" answer.

A manipulator will always get the results he needs. Referendums are not democracy, rather they are nothing more than a fake process with no true impact. Chen Shui-bian will certainly manipulate it to have whatever results he wants.

Countering slowdown

Comment on "China 'can help counter' slowdown" (China Daily, December 18)

It is refreshing to hear an American politician publicly acknowledging China's weight and strong influence on world affairs. China has gone a long way since 1949.
