President Hu Jintao has pledged China will make greater contributions in the global battle against climate change.
Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, called on developed countries to step up emission-reduction efforts, and provide financial and technical support for developing countries, Xinhua reported on Saturday.
"How we cope with climate change is related to the country's economic development and people's practical benefits. It's in line with the country's basic interests," he said at a Friday study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
The study focused on global climate change and the country's ability to tackle the issue.
Hu said that as a developing country, China should stick to the responsibilities and principles listed in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol.
Hu urged relevant organizations and companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by scientifically optimizing energy management. He mentioned methods such as promoting a recycling economy, increasing forest coverage, scientifically exploring water resources and strengthening global cooperation.
He said the country must enhance its abilities to monitor, forecast and withstand extreme weather-related disasters.
