As US gasoline prices hit records on almost a daily basis, an increasing number of motorists are following a radical driving technique designed to eke out every last mile from a tank of fuel. Known as 'hypermiling', the method can double gas mileage, even in gas-guzzling vehicles that would normally get less than 20 mpg.

美国油价几乎每天都创出新高，于是越来越多的驾车人士想方设法用一箱油跑最多的路。被称为“超级惜油”的驾驶方法能够使汽油里程数加倍，即使在那些平时每加仑行驶不到20英里的高油耗车上也能实现。

该报道中，hypermiling就是美国的节油车主们造出来表达“超级惜油”的新词，也是“用有限的油量跑更多里程”的意思。Gas mileage是the ratio of the number of miles traveled to the number of gallons of gasoline burned（一加仑汽油所行驶的里程数），而gas-guzzling vehicle指的是an automobile that has low fuel efficiency, getting relatively few miles per gallon（高油耗的机动车），也叫做gas-guzzler。
