此前，关于北京奥运会中国代表团旗手的选择，一直存在多种猜测，而各种说法也都大相径庭。本周四，国家体育总局宣布，篮球明星姚明因为其身高优势，加上他良好的国际名声，最终成为旗手的不二人选。

"After serious consideration, we have decided that Yao Ming will be the flag bearer," Mr Cui Dalin, the deputy chief of China's Olympic team, told reporters in Beijing on Thursday.

国家体育总局副局长崔大林于本周四向记者宣布：“经过慎重考虑，我们决定让姚明做我们的奥运旗手。”

 Yao was considered the most likely candidate this year due to his international fame and impressive height (2.26m), even though he did the job four years ago in Athens. Since 1984, China has assigned the flag-bearing honor to men's basketball players like Wang Libin (1984), Song Tao (1988), Song Li (1992), Liu Yudong (1996 and 2000) and Yao Ming (2004).

虽然姚明已经担任过2004年雅典奥运会的中国代表团旗手，但因他良好的国际声誉及身高优势，今年他仍是旗手人选中呼声最高的一个。自1984年以来，中国就把担当奥运旗手的光荣使命给了男篮运动员，比如：1984年的奥运旗手王立彬，1988年的宋涛，1992年的宋力刚，1996年和2000年的刘玉栋以及2004年的姚明。

上述报道中，flag bearer是“旗手”的英文表达，在这里指的当然就是“奥运旗手”了。类似的，“火炬手”就是 “torch bearer”。而能担当“奥运旗手”显然是运动员的荣誉，所以上面的报道也提到了“flag-bearing honor”，即“担当旗手的荣耀（或光荣使命）”。
