Lai, 80, a resident of Wenjiang district, Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, has been plagued by persistent wrong number calls at the start of the new school term annually for the past six years.

The culprit is the 114 directory enquiry service, which has been mistakenly giving Lai's phone number to parents wanting to consult with the Wenjiang District Education Bureau. The bureau, however, denies making any error when it registered its number in the 114 data base.

The matter was temporarily resolved on Monday, when the local telephone company agreed to stop giving Lai's number to callers for the Wenjiang Bureau and find out what the cause of the problem is.
