BEIJING, August 11 -- Under the morning-finals format, Zhou Jiawei took the limelight in the men's 100 meters butterfly by clocking an Asian record time in 52.19 seconds in the evening heat of the China Open swim meet here on Saturday.
As a test of the morning-finals format to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, most of the Chinese swimmers performed mediocre at the meet for its congested schedule with an international event in Chiba, Japan to be kicked off during August 21-24,
Zhou was the first one who reached the Olympic Standard A of the meet so far. The previous Asian record was held by Japanese veteran Takashi Yamamoto.
Before the meet, which serves as an Olympic qualification meet, there were only five Chinese men's swimmers qualified for Standard A in five events.
The four-day meet, which set only 30 events, will finish on August12 with the last 10 finals to be taken in the morning.
