Diver targets gold at World Series

MEXICO CITY -- Chinese Olympic champion Guo Jingjing told a Mexico City press conference on Wednesday that China's divers were successful due to good state planning for sports, which identifies athletic talent from an early age and trains athletes at the highest level.

Guo said she had been training for 19 years and focuses on every details so that she can improve. Guo will compete in the International Swimming Federation's World Diving Series, whose second phase is on Friday and Saturday in Mexico City.

Guo, who won this year's World Championships in the Australian city of Melbourne, will partner Wu Minxia for the three-meter synchronized dive even.

Speaking at the end of her second day of practice, Hebei-province native Guo said the China's athletes have all they need to train, because the nation is focusing massively on sport, in a bid to get the best results at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The diver will aim to repeat the three-meter board and three-meter synchronized diving wins she achieved in the World Series's first date in the English city of Sheffield.

In the Mexico round winner will get US$5,000, second place US$4,000 and third place US$3,000. There is a US$25,000 bonus for divers that win all three competitions in the series.

The full list of nations competing in Mexico is: Mexico, China, the United States, Brazil, Cuba, France, Russia, Australia, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Japan, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Malaysia.

The last event in the series will be held in the Chinese city of Nanjing.
