Comments on Ravi S. Narasimhan's column entitled "Let the G in GDP be for green" (China Daily, January 8, 2007 )

I have read with interest Ravi Narasimhan's well-crafted article and cannot agree with him more on the point that, to borrow from the Patek Philippe watch tag line, "We never actually own the earth. We merely take care of it for the next generation."

I am an Indian engineer living in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. I am a moderate environmentalist who strongly believes that a little compromise in our lifestyle should add a few good points to a greener tomorrow.

At home, we try to educate the school children about environmental causes. I think in China, the role of NGOs in bringing awareness to students is very minimum.

When I was in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, I used to teach some school children English. I was giving enough importance to the environment and to my students along with English. And it worked well.

I am delighted to read the interesting article. Going green might be an educational process.

Nevertheless, hopefully everyone will do his or her part for a better future of ours.

Developed countries have the technology to reduce their emissions but big business is making too much money and constantly blocks the implementation.

Developing countries can look at the mistakes made by the West and seek to avoid them.
