It is indeed alarming to read about the growing problem of waste disposal. Supermarkets could help significantly by reducing the quantity of plastic bags they use daily.

In my home country, Australia, customers are encouraged to use "eco friendly" reusable shopping bags sold by the stores. Other stores charge extra for plastic bags and Aldi, a major European chain store, does not provide bags at all.

The time to act is now not when we are consumed by our own garbage!
