Imbalance of sexes

Comments on Li Xing's column "Raising my voice for our girls" (China Daily, January 25, 2007)

I am firmly behind Li Xing. The concerns of gender inequality have been brought up countless times, but it seems discrimination against women is getting worse and worse, though, a lot of work has been done for years.

As for the sex imbalance problem between the newborn male and female babies, I believe that most of the governments, including the central and local, have done excellent work. I don't think there would be another country with more than 1 billion people able to do a decent job like that.

As to the overall picture of the campaign for the equality of opportunity and equal pay for women, it has a long way to go.

Let me chip in my two-cents worth as an overseas female Chinese.

China is too steep in its tradition of favoring the male of the species.

Thumbs up for giving the girls equal education opportunities. This is a huge and positive start. Education is vital, more than equality (one person's view) of the sexes.

As for job opportunities, let's be realistic. Personally I think there is greater openness on this issue in Asia than in the West. (Ironically the first woman prime minister came from the Middle East.) The West champions this in the feminist movement and they're still struggling for equal pay and equality in workplaces.

The time will come when there will be equal opportunities and pay one fine day. (When the time comes, hopefully the males will not take the back seat though!)
