STOCKHOLM - Two military helicopters collided in mid-air during a national guard exercise in the south of Sweden on Tuesday, killing all four people on board.

The two helicopters, which each carried a pilot and a navigator, belonged to a helicopter base in Linkoping and were part of the F 17 regiment in Ronneby, the military said in a statement.

"When the rescuers arrived at the scene there was nothing to do. All four were deceased," Swedish police spokesman Robert Loeffel said.

The helicopters were both German-produced MBB BO 105 CB-3s, which the Swedish military calls Helicopter 9, according to the Swedish military's website.

The site says they were long used as anti-tank helicopters but are now mainly used as transport helicopters.
