Doctors: Soeharto's condition remains unstable

JAKARTA -- The condition of ailing former Indonesian President Soeharto was unstable as his hospitalization for multiple organ failure entered the third week, doctors said Friday.

"He is unstable and still supported by ventilator," said Dr. Mardjo Soebiandono, head of the doctor team for the 86-year-old former president at the Pertamina Hospital here.

"His lungs and heart still have problems and we remain to detect a systemic infection," he told a press conference.

Soeharto was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 4 and has since been hovering death.

He ruled the country for 32 years before forcing to step down in May 1998 following widespread protests against him for corruption.
