Updated: 2008-01-20 10:13 JAKARTA - The Indonesian presidential medical team expressed optimism on Saturday that former president Soeharto will be able to leave the hospital in the near future as his condition has shown progress.
"The general condition of Soeharto has improved and blood pressure reading keeps in stable, namely 110/40 mm Hg. His heart and lungs have also shown improvements, and indications of systemic infection have lessened," the top physician, Dr Mardjo Soebiandono, said at Pertamina Hospital where Soeharto is treated. He forecast that Soeharto has big possibility to return home and go on receiving medical treatment there. Until now, doctors are still trying their best to improve and stabilize Soeharto's general condition. For instance, they reduce his dependence on ventilator and other medical devices. Soeharto was admitted to hospital for multiple organ failure after a decline in the functions of his heart, lungs and kidneys since January 4. Soeharto is Indonesia's longest president with his military-backed regime ruling the country for 32 years. He stepped down from power following nationwide protests against his corrupt and repressive government in May 1998. |
