In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban, who is currently on a three-nation tour in East Asia, expressed "deep concern at the violence resulting from the recent demonstrations in Mongolia" and regretted the "consequent loss of life."

He deplored the "resort to violence to protest the conduct of the parliamentary elections last weekend," the statement said.

"He urges all parties to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue and appeals to all demonstrators to refrain from any further acts of violence," it added.

The secretary-general urged the parties to "find ways to settle the current crisis, fully respecting the rule of law."

Some 1,000 people marched in Mongolia' capital Ulan Bator on Tuesday, protesting alleged voting frauds in last weekend's parliamentary election.
