Updated: 2008-07-18 20:40 DAKAR -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has agreed to restore diplomatic relations with Chad, mediator Senegal said on Friday. A statement from the Senegalese presidency said " The president from the Republic of Sudan...accepts the restoration of diplomatic relations between Chad and Sudan in response to the solemn appeal from brother, (Senegalese) President Abdoulaye Wade. " Seneagal made the announcement following a meeting on Thursday in the Senegalese capital between the Sudanese and Chadian foreign ministers. Sudan cut diplomatic ties with Chad in May after rebels attacked the capital Khartoum. Sudan said Chad was behind the attacks, an accusation denied by the Chadian government. Sudan and chad have accused each other repeatedly of supporting rebellions in their respective territories since conflict began in Darfur in 2003. Rebel forces have twice attacked Chad's capital N'Djamena in the last two years. |
